Pet Society by Playfish

Why is this cute game from Playfish just so popular? Does it have cutting edge graphics? Is it a game with a compelling story? Is it an addictive game that you can play during office break, like Pacman?
No, no and no. Well, it IS addictive but it is in no way like the classic game Pacman. (recreated into yet another Facebook application which we will discuss later on) It does not have ‘cutting edge’ graphics but it does look exceptionally cute and adorable. Story? Well, Pet Society is not a roleplaying game to begin with so you should not expect a story out of it.
I played Pet Society and like most people who tried it, I wanted to get every single item out there. And since you need coins to purchase furniture and food, I made ways so I can earn more gold. In this very simple premise, Pet Society has grown colossal.
Why are people so addicted?
I stand firmly behind my thesis that the bread and butter of all Facebook Games and all Facebook Cute Apps would be the innate urge of all users (and mankind) to collect and horde. That is the ultimate marketing plan. There is something about collecting that appeals to us so much. Whether it be jewelry, books, action figures… it becomes a bragging right.
Pet Society’s appeal is vaguely the same as that of The Sims. Though of course, minus the heavy social interaction. You get to collect cute stuff and decorate your home! Who can resist the little toasters and the quaint little tubs and the cute fluffy bean bags? The food looks smooth and cute and yummy too!
cupcakes and candy and chocolates at Pet Society! YUM!
They started with the gymnasium and the ball, the frisbee and the skipping rope. Now they introduced fishing. Who knows that Pet Society will come up with next? Who wants to bet that they will introduce a COOKING feature next? (it IS a way to get people to buy more, right? Just look at their other game, Restaurant City)
